About Us

Who We Are

The SHAC Lab in the Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health at Michigan State University is a research laboratory which concentrates on the geographic and equity dimensions of neighborhoods and public health policy. The SHAC Lab formed in 2016 and is interested in the ways that the places we live, work, play and study shape our health. Our work includes understanding how aspects of the built, physical and social environments may bolster or hinder mental and physical health.

The SHAC Lab includes a group of undergraduate students, graduate students, medical students, and postdoctoral fellows with workstations featuring spatial analysis software, statistical analysis software, design software, and scripting programs.

We hope that our work will inform efforts to promote equitable opportunities for a healthy life, equitable wellbeing, and equitable health care.

Our Agenda

Our broad agenda parallels the University's: to advance knowledge and transform lives by innovating and applying geoanalytical approaches to vital health equity issues.

MSU Today feartured Dr. Amber Pearson's work with the Nature IDEAS (Nature Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access Study), supported by the REI Cooperative Action Fund. This project is the first ever randomized controlled trial focusing on the impact of nature-based interventions on university students, particularly students of color. The goal is to explore how spending time in green spaces affects their mental health, sense of belonging, and overall well-being.

”Dr. Amber Pearson Featured as REI Fund Surpasses 2 Million Donations with 60 New Grants”

SEATTLE, May 7, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- The REI Cooperative Action Fund is investing over $3.8 million in 60 organizations focused on enhancing community health through outdoor activities. This funding supports nonprofits serving historically excluded communities and researchers studying the health benefits of time spent outdoors, made possible by more than 2 million individual donations from the REI community.

"The REI Fund brings together the strength of our community, centering outdoor equity leaders and health scientists to address critical funding needs," said Kristen Ragain, managing director.

This spring and fall, the REI Fund will provide unrestricted funding across three priorities: connecting people to the outdoors, creating space, and centering health. Advisors identified 25 emerging organizations, including:

  • Brown Girls Climb: Promotes representation in outdoor activities ($40,000).
  • Piikani Lodge Health Institute Focuses on the health of the Blackfeet people in Montana ($40,000).
  • Great Plains Restoration Council Works on ecological health through native ecosystem restoration ($40,000).
  • Backyard Basecamp Reconnects communities of color to nature in Baltimore ($40,000).
  • This cycle also marks the REI Fund's first open call for grant proposals, leading to 22 new research projects exploring the impacts of nature on health. Notable grants include:

  • Matthew Davis, Clemson University Researching nature visitation disparities ($200,000).
  • Amber Pearson, Michigan State University Conducting a trial on nature-based interventions for BIPOC students ($196,985).

  • The U.S. Global Change Research Program is undertaking a a National Nature Assessment. "This [assessment} will take stock of U.S. lands waters, wildlife and the benefits they provide to our economy, health, climate, enviornmental justice and national security." Consisting of 11 different chapters, this project will draw on experts from many fields. ”National Nature Assessment” Dr. Pearson has been selected as an author for the health and wellbeing chapter.
